第一集：1989年3月，河北省张家口市宣化区下八里村，两位村民在为农田灌溉浇水的时候，意外冲出两座辽代砖室墓葬，接到消息的当地文物工作者迅速展开了抢救性发掘，经过对两座墓葬的清理，考古人员发现新发现的两座墓竟然与距离不远的一座1971年发现的辽代墓葬，无论是墓葬规模和结构都极为相似，考古人员初步判断墓主人应该同属于一个家族。 第二集： 张氏家族三座墓葬陆续出土之后，考古人员又在随后四年间从下八里村陆续发现了 M4、 M5和M6号墓，只可惜M5和M6号墓由于被盗，出土文物很少，但幸运的是5号墓的墓志完好地保存下来，而且这两座墓中的绘画内容和风格与之前发掘的三座墓如出一辙，为他们同是张世卿家族成员提供了重要依据。 第三集：1971年宣化下八里村首次发现辽代贵族张世卿之墓，随后20年来陆续又挖掘出土了十多座辽代墓葬，墓室内满壁色彩绚丽、画工精美的辽代画幅，让河北宣化下八里的墓葬群一时名声大噪。
